"I want my art to be a walk in the woods, a pause in the chaos. A refuge. The world is a
devastating, ruthless place in many ways. I do not want to shock people with my art. I want
my art to act as an antidote to all the shocking things that exist in the world. In my
paintings, the landscape is an entryway to something hopeful, simple, and sacred. Like
childhood. Accessibility in art is often seen as an insult. I don’t shy away from accessible –
from getting people who don’t always feel comfortable in the contemporary art world to
stand in front of my work and absorb it.
My work explores the environment through an abstract/semi-abstract lens, conveying the
landscape as even more magical and otherworldly on the canvas. I see my natural subjects
– trees, water, flowers, rock, sky – as female, brave, fragmented, wind-swept, and rain-
drenched. Most of my paintings are heavily textured with several layers of paint. Every
mark and dab of color is intentional, though the intent itself isn’t exactly linear. Every layer
matters.
In my dreams, my paintings are visual representations of the verse of Robert Frost and
Mary Oliver. Oliver’s work touches on mundane beauty, ordinary moments, and the
importance of recognizing those moments and sitting with them. “Pay attention. Be
astonished. Tell about it.” Rays of sun through leaves, rays of light on the horizon, the
wonder of colors in nature, ripples of water, drops of rain. Light and water eventually move
or change, or fade. But the moment they flicker or shine or shift – that one moment – is
often majestic, even in its routineness.
After an intimate look at my work, I hope viewers walk away with both a sense of calmness
and a sense of purpose. My aim is not to paint what I see, but to paint a feeling, a mood, and a sense of place. Be astonished." ~ Julia Powell
